In his TED Talk, Andrew Forrest describes one way to bring costs into better alignment with reality. I think it requires a bit too much foresightedness and a broader view of "shared value" for broad adoption. Nevertheless, it is highly innovative and, as one piece of the puzzle, it should be supported and promulgated by consumers. For broader adoption, governments that truly represent the people should make it more realistically costly for firms to ignore such long-term decision making and costs to society.
