Alternative sources of energy don't necessarily come without a cost to the environment. Awareness, innovation and management of these tradeoffs will be necessary for a mature systems-level approach to a new energy paradigm that recognizes a more fulsome approach to environmental stewardship.

"Achieving a Balance Between Natural Resource Protection and Solar Energy Development" "AMC is encouraged by the state’s inclusion of land-use siting guidelines that will prohibit solar energy development where at least 50 percent of the parcel’s land area is designated as Priority Habitat, Core Habitat, or Critical Natural Landscape. We would also like to see the “ Greenfield Subtractor,” which is the financial disincentive to build on forests and other open space, increased to five times its current level in order to further discourage development on such greenfields." I think it is important to view such constraints not so much as a restriction on use of "greenfield," as important as that is, but more importantly as a stimulus to increase innovation and use of surfaces in the built environment, including brownfield sites.
